Appropriate duties for a TA: The teaching assistantship arrangement is intended to provide the course instructor with the assistance of a qualified, capable, and knowledgeable student, and to provide the student with exposure to teaching and course management responsibilities as a component of their training experience. TAs should be assigned tasks that are consistent with this intent. Specific duties assigned may vary by course topic and content, as expectations of TA familiarity with course content vary by course. Examples of appropriate teaching assistant duties may include: assisting with facilitating in-class discussion or leading small discussion groups or journal clubs; holding review sessions or office hours; tutoring of students in course work; laboratory preparation, supervision, and cleanup; assisting in the preparation of problem sets and/or examinations; and assisting with management of LMS materials and the use of virtual teaching and learning tools. A TA may assist the course instructor with correcting assignments and other assessments where appropriate, though TA grading work should be reviewed by instructors, who make final determination of students’ grades. Assisting with grading should not constitute the entirety of the TA’s responsibilities, as exposure to a variety of teaching and course management responsibilities is an important aspect of the Teaching Assistantship. While a TA may be asked to provide incidental help with routine course administration tasks, such tasks should not be a substitute for activities that contribute to a substantive and fulfilling teaching assistantship, nor should they include duties appropriate specifically to the role of the Course Director.
